Jack’s Tastes of the Town: Part I

When I created this blog last summer, my goal was to contribute something to the few of you who read it (thank you by the way). Now that I have read a few blogs, I feel like I am getting the hang of writing a blog and unleashing the relentlessly rampaging thoughts in this head of mine. Any ways, I still want to contribute something to you guys, and I figured what is something I can discuss with complete strangers and still hold their attention? Food. And what better way is there to talk food than to talk about undiscovered food? Having said that, I present to you one of my favorite “small” eateries of Tuscaloosa:

Bama Wings Fish and More

As one of the wise men once said, “Oh my snappers.” This Wendy’s-turned-Wings restaurant features one of the cheapest and most fulfilling soul food locations in the great city of Tuscaloosa. Expect a nostalgic breakdown when you walk into this place, because your mind will trick you into believing you are at Wendy’s.
It’s extremely hysterical walking in because it’s like Wendy moved out for college and her greasy, unemployed older brother took over his little sister’s former room. Don’t let that last sentence discourage you from going; this is truly the best wings restaurant in town.

Top ten things I want to get involved with in college (no particular order).

Well, I am at a turning point in my life.  I graduated high school a little under a month ago.  So naturally, I feel like college could be a fresh start to an eventually stale life (at the rate I was going).  As a result of this new fascination, I felt like it’d be good to make a list of all the things I would like to accomplish while I’m in school.  Because we all like lists, right?

10. Making viral videos

9. Producing an album filled with awesome yet strange music through Garage Band

8. Selling / Buying stuff on eBay

7. Going on an obscene amount of trips

7. Learn to count

6. Attempt stand up comedy

5. Meet Conan O’Brien

4. Join a band and play at least one bar show

3. [Over Four years] see every MLB team play.  Even you, Toronto Blue Jays.

2. Make a short film

1. Dominate some intramural sports, yo.

and also, continue this fantastic blog.

Wow. Today was BAD. It seems like everything that happened today was for the worst, almost cynically humorous.  I don’t want to get into details, but I got a horrible grade on a test, and many little things didn’t seem to go my way today.  But once I was able to leave school, I could sort of see the “big” picture; we’re all meant to have days where we can’t (metaphorically) start the car. But once you fill the tank with gas, then you can go where ever you please.  I realized this when I popped in a recently burned CD and skipped a couple of tracks to “Just Breathe” by Pearl Jam (While I haven’t listened to them until recently, I have discovered that some of their work is absolutely fantastic).  This song calmed me down and helped me realize that, in the words of Boosie, “Minor setback for ah major cumbak.”* Anyways, I felt like I needed to post a mini playlist for the way life struck me today, so without any further ado, I present to you:

“Playlist Daylist One: The Inevitable Triumph of a Bitterly Dissatisfied Man”

“Just Breathe” Pearl Jam

“Til I Get My Way” The Black Keys

“Hate It Here” Wilco

*I never have, or will, listen to “Boosie”. I only know this quote because it was hanging in the halls of my high school hallway.

What songs described your day?

Sailing to Byzantium

Due to “Snowmageddon 2011” last night, I decided to watch a few movies that I received for Christmas. The first one was “Star Wars: Episode V,” since the snowstorm outside was very similar to Hoth, the setting for the movie’s opening sequence. Now this was the first time I have seen this Star Wars movie since I was a child and I will say that it amazed me. I have never realized how advanced some films are for their time and the entire Star Wars franchise is a technological masterpiece. I really don’t feel like I can elaborate on this movie, it’s just too great to try to describe. Go watch it.

Next movie I saw was “No Country for Old Men.” This was a captivating, suspenseful, and gut-wrenching film. I haven’t been the biggest fan of the Coen Bros. (The Big Lebowski was an extreme let down, in my opinion) but this was a remarkable movie. Anton Chigurh is definitely one of the greatest villains of the screen in recent years and his weapon of choice is (for lack of better words) flippin’ sweet. Hands down favorite scene: when Llewelyn Moss wakes up in Mexico to a mariachi band. What they say, in English, is: “You wanted to fly without wings, you wanted to touch the sky, you wanted too much wealth, you wanted to play with fire.” Their song describes the themes portrayed in this film perfectly. This one’s definitely on my list of favorite movies.
